Does a MacBook keep downloading with the lid closed?

By Matyas Rathonyi. Updated October 5, 2026. Guides

Usually not. Closing the lid puts a MacBook to sleep, and browser, Steam and other app downloads stop with it. Power Nap only covers Apple's own background tasks. To keep any download running with the lid shut and no monitor, arm Clamshell for Mac before you close the lid.

You start a big download, a game in Steam, a disk image, a model file, a project archive, and you want to fold the laptop and leave. Whether it finishes depends on one thing: is the Mac awake? This guide covers what really happens at lid close, what Power Nap does and does not do, the free fixes that work, and how to keep downloading with the lid shut.

What happens to a download when you close the lid?

Closing the lid is one of Apple's documented ways to put a Mac laptop to sleep. In sleep the Mac is on but draws much less power, apps stop running, and active network transfers stop with them. When you open the lid again, what happens next is up to the app and the server: some downloads resume where they left off, others fail and start over.

Lid-close sleep is separate from idle sleep, the timer that sleeps a Mac you are not using. Settings and tools that hold off idle sleep do not stop lid-close sleep. Apple's built-in exception is closed-display mode, which Apple says needs power and an external keyboard and mouse along with the display.

With the default settings the download stalls when the lid closes. With Clamshell armed it reaches 100 percent. z Lid closed download stalls Clamshell armed reaches 100%
Same download, lid closed, no monitor. The default stops at whatever point the lid went down. An awake Mac carries on to the end.

Does Power Nap keep downloading while the Mac sleeps?

Power Nap is the feature people expect to save them, and it covers less than its name suggests. According to Apple's description, a sleeping Mac with Power Nap checks for new Mail, updates Calendar events and updates other iCloud events. On power it can also download software updates and run Time Machine backups. On a MacBook, the Enable Power Nap option is in System Settings, Battery, Options.

Power Nap covers Mail, Calendar and iCloud, plus software updates and Time Machine on power. Browser downloads, Steam and other app transfers are not on Apple's list. Power Nap covers Mail, Calendar, iCloud Updates, on power Time Machine, on power Not on Apple's list Browser downloads Steam and game stores Other app transfers
Power Nap is for Apple's housekeeping. Apple's list stops at Mail, Calendar, iCloud, software updates and Time Machine. Your own downloads need an awake Mac.

So Power Nap is useful for backups and updates, and it is not a way to finish a Steam download or a large file from a browser.

Free ways to keep a download going

If the lid can stay open, you do not need to buy anything.

Lid open, display off, on power

In System Settings, Lock Screen, set Turn display off on power adapter when inactive. In Battery, Options, turn on Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. Both are in Apple's sleep settings guide. The best free option for a long download at home.

Wrap a Terminal download in caffeinate

caffeinate -i curl -LO <url> holds off idle sleep for exactly as long as the download runs. The lid has to stay open.

Hold the Mac awake for one app

Find the app's PID in Activity Monitor, then run caffeinate -i -w <pid>. The sleep hold ends when that process quits. Again, lid open only.

Closed-display mode

External display, keyboard, mouse and power connected: the closed Mac stays awake. Fine if that is your desk setup anyway.

Why caffeinate stops working the moment you close the lid is covered in why caffeinate does not work with the lid closed. sudo pmset -a disablesleep 1 does survive lid close, but it is a global admin switch with no timer that you must remember to undo: see pmset disablesleep explained.

Keep downloading with the lid closed

When you need to close the lid, to pack up a desk, leave the laptop on a shelf, or stop the screen lighting the room, Clamshell for Mac keeps the Mac awake while armed. No external display, no sudo, no admin password. It needs an Apple Silicon MacBook on macOS 14 or later.

  1. Start the download in the browser, Steam or any other app.
  2. Plug in if you can. Clamshell works on battery too. If you stay on battery, consider turning on Disarm on low battery (off by default) so the Mac sleeps below a level you choose.
  3. Disconnect external displays. With a display connected Clamshell pauses (yellow menu bar icon) instead of arming, and arms automatically once displays disconnect.
  4. Arm it from the menu bar. That covers the next close. Holding Option while closing the lid works for one close too, on a MacBook Air M2 (2022) or later or a 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021) or later.
  5. Check the armed state, then close the lid. The built-in display stays black and the Mac stays on the network. Opening the lid locks the Mac.

Clamshell does not watch the download. It will not disarm when the file finishes, and it does not repair a dropped Wi-Fi connection. The Mac simply stays awake until you open the lid or disarm, or until a safety cutoff ends the session.

What about uploads and cloud sync?

The same rule applies in the other direction. Uploads, sync clients and file transfers run while the Mac is awake and stop when it sleeps. Time Machine is the exception Apple builds in: with Power Nap on and the Mac on power, it can back up during sleep. Everything else needs the Mac awake, lid open with the free settings above, or lid closed with a tool like Clamshell.

Frequently asked questions

Does a MacBook keep downloading when the lid is closed?

Usually not. Closing the lid puts a MacBook to sleep, and browser, Steam and other app downloads stop until it wakes. Apple's Power Nap covers Mail, Calendar, iCloud and, on power, software updates and Time Machine backups, not your app downloads.

Does Power Nap continue downloads while the Mac sleeps?

Apple's description of Power Nap lists Mail, Calendar and iCloud updates, plus software updates and Time Machine backups when the Mac is on power. It does not list browser or app downloads, so do not count on it to finish them.

Will a download resume after the Mac wakes up?

It depends on the app and the server. Some downloads pick up where they stopped, others fail and have to start again. Keeping the Mac awake avoids the question.

How do I keep downloading with the lid closed and no monitor?

Arm Clamshell for Mac, check that it shows armed in the menu bar, then close the lid. The Mac stays awake and on the network, so the download keeps going. It works on Apple Silicon MacBooks with macOS 14 or later, without sudo or admin rights.

Can I keep a Steam download going overnight on a MacBook?

Yes, as long as the Mac stays awake. Leave the lid open on power with automatic sleep prevented, or close the lid with Clamshell armed. For long downloads, keep the Mac on power and on a hard, ventilated surface.
